Not the least of the problems faced by the track building crews of the Central pacific on the transcontinental lines was bridging the many mountain chasms. Literally millions of feet of timber were use to construct trestles, often reaching dizzying heights. The trestles, with intricate
cross-members, looked as if they had been spun by giant spiders. Woring
on them–or even just riding across–was no place for the weak-hearted!
