The first railroads ran on rails that were little more than strap iron laid on rough ties on roadbeds that were not level, and contained sharp curves. As a result many accidents occured. 

Some railroads even sold tickets wit the understanding that passengers were subject to call for labor, if needed, to put the train back on the tracks.
